Thailand in March: Weather, Best Places to Go and Festivals

By Many2Go Family Holidays7 min read

Yes. March is one of the driest months in Thailand, with clear skies, calm seas and water temperatures of 28°C to 30°C on both the Andaman Coast and the Gulf of Thailand. The catch is the heat. Daytime temperatures range from 28°C to 38°C, so outdoor sightseeing works best before 11 AM and after 4 PM. Shoulder season starts in mid-March, and hotel rates and crowds start to drop with it.

  • In March, both coasts have beach weather at the same time. For most of the year, only one side does.

  • The Andaman Coast has its best diving conditions now, before the monsoon arrives in May.

  • Air quality in Chiang Mai and the rest of the north is often poor in March.

  • Makha Bucha falls on February 21 in 2027, so it isn't a March festival this year.

  • Prices rise sharply around Songkran (April 13 to 15, 2027).

What is the weather like in Thailand in March?

March is when Thailand's hot season begins. It rarely rains, the air is humid, and the sun stays strong from mid-morning until late afternoon. March days are noticeably hotter than Thailand in February, though the sea is just as calm and the sky just as clear.

Does it rain in Thailand in March?

Rarely. Bangkok and both coasts get very little rain in March. A short shower can roll in during an afternoon late in the month, but a full day of rain is unusual.

How warm is the sea in Thailand in March?

The water sits between 28°C and 30°C on both coasts, warm enough to snorkel or dive for a long time without a wetsuit.

Is March peak season or low season in Thailand?

It falls in between. High season peaks from December through February and carries into early March. By mid-month, winter travelers from Europe and North America are flying home and Thailand moves into shoulder season.

Hotel prices start falling, especially in the second half of the month. Domestic flights such as Bangkok to Phuket or Krabi get easier to book, and places like the Grand Palace and Maya Bay are less crowded. Thailand tour packages also tend to come with better rates and more departure dates than in the peak months.

Prices go back up in April for Songkran, the Thai New Year, which runs from April 13 to 15, 2027. Book anything after April 10 early.

Which coast is better in March: Andaman or Gulf of Thailand?

The Andaman Coast is the better pick for diving, limestone scenery and island-hopping. The Gulf suits travelers who want to learn to dive, stay at a resort or move at a slower pace.

Andaman Coast in March

This is the last full month of prime conditions before the monsoon, and a lot of the top things to do in Thailand happen on this coast.

Mu Ko Similan National Park opens only from mid-October to mid-May, and March brings some of its clearest water of the season. Liveaboard trips leave from Khao Lak.

On Koh Phi Phi, flat seas make day trips easy. Take an early boat to reach Maya Bay before the tour groups.

At Ao Thalane in Krabi, kayak routes wind through mangrove channels between limestone cliffs. Some channels can only be paddled at high tide.

Gulf of Thailand in March

The Gulf's dry season runs roughly from February to September, so March is a safe bet here too.

Koh Tao is one of the busiest places in the world for dive certifications, and its courses are among the cheapest in Asia. March to May is a good window for whale sharks near Chumphon Pinnacle, though there's no guarantee of seeing one.

Koh Samui is the most developed island in the Gulf, with an airport, private pool villas and beachfront resorts. The quiet bays and easy logistics make it a regular pick for Thailand honeymoon packages.

On Koh Phangan, the north coast beaches like Bottle Beach and Thong Nai Pan are far quieter than the Full Moon Party side of the island.

Can you visit both coasts on one trip?

thailand

You can, but crossing over takes a full day. From Krabi to Koh Samui, you'll usually ride a bus or van across the peninsula and then catch a ferry. Flying is quicker but often connects through Bangkok. On a trip of 10 days or less, sticking to one coast saves time.

Where should you avoid in Thailand in March?

Skip the north. March is burning season in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Pai, when farmers clear their fields with fire. The smoke can hang around for weeks and push air quality into unhealthy levels.

The north is still one of the best places to visit in Thailand, just not this month. Thailand in January brings cool mornings and clear mountain views around Chiang Mai, so plan the north for then instead.

How do you sightsee in Thailand in March without overheating?

Split each day into three parts. Do outdoor sights in the morning, go indoors at midday, and head back out in the evening.

What food is in season in Thailand in March?

Mango season begins in March. Nam Dok Mai mangoes, the long yellow kind, are at their sweetest and show up at street stalls and night markets all over the country.

Order mango sticky rice, or khao niew mamuang: warm coconut sticky rice with fresh mango, salted coconut cream and crispy mung beans on top. In Bangkok, two places have been making it for decades. Kor Panich is on Tanao Road near Khao San Road, and Mae Varee is in Thonglor next to the BTS station.

While you're at it, try coconut ice cream served in the shell, nam manao (iced lime juice) and fresh coconut water.
