February is one of the best months to visit the Maldives, and it's the month we recommend most often to our clients. It's usually the driest and sunniest month of the year, the sea sits around 28°C, and on a good day you can see 20 to 30 metres underwater. The downside is cost. It's peak season, Valentine's week is pricier, and taxes add roughly 30% on top of the room rate.
Quick takeaways

Weather: about 10 hours of sun a day and roughly 50mm of rain for the whole month, usually in 3 to 5 short showers. Air is 25°C to 30°C, sea about 28°C.
Crowds: busy, but calmer than the Christmas and New Year rush.
Mantas: the big Hanifaru Bay feeding frenzy doesn't happen in February. Mantas move to the western side of the atolls and show up in smaller groups.
Whale sharks: South Ari Atoll has them all year, February included.
Dates: if you're watching the budget, skip February 12 to 16. We book clients on the 1st to 11th or the 17th to 28th.
Booking: resorts 4 to 6 months out, liveaboards 6 to 12 months out.
Flights: if your resort needs a seaplane, land before about 3:00 PM or you'll spend a night in Malé or Hulhumalé.
Is February the best month to visit the Maldives?
If you're looking for the best time to visit the Maldives for beach weather, February is hard to beat. It falls in the middle of the dry northeast monsoon, which locals call Iruvai.
February weather in numbers
Metric | February average |
Sunshine | ~10 hours per day |
Rainfall | ~28mm to 50mm for the whole month |
Rainy days | 3 to 5 |
Air temperature | 25°C to 30°C (daytime ~28°C) |
Sea temperature | ~28°C |
Underwater visibility | 20m to 30m+ |
On the ground, that means flat lagoons and smooth speedboat and seaplane rides. The snorkel trips and sandbank picnics we book rarely get called off because of rough sea. If anyone in your group gets seasick, this matters more than the sunshine hours.
February vs. December and January
If you're weighing the Maldives in January against February, the weather is almost the same. The difference is that December and January also bring Christmas, New Year and school holiday crowds. Late December is also when half of India seems to fly out at once, and fares from Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Mumbai and Delhi jump. February is still peak season, but resorts feel less packed and we have an easier time getting you the villa category you want.
When it does rain, it's usually a 15 to 20 minute burst. You'll hear it on the villa roof, order another coffee, and it'll be gone before you finish.
February marine life: what you'll see

Plenty of Maldives content online mixes up the seasons, and we often reset expectations on calls.
The manta ray myth
Those videos of 100+ mantas spinning through Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll are filmed in the wet season. Peak action runs June to October, when the southwest monsoon pushes plankton into the bay.
You'll still see mantas in February. They follow the plankton, and during the northeast monsoon the plankton shifts to the western side of the atolls. Expect small groups or single mantas, usually hovering over cleaning stations while small fish pick them clean.
Rangali Madivaru, on the western side of South Ari Atoll, is one of the better-known February spots. If mantas are high on your list, tell us when you enquire and we'll point you to resorts close to active western-side sites.
Whale sharks and bigger sharks
The South Ari Marine Protected Area, around Dhigurah, is the best place in the country for whale sharks, and they're here year-round. Nobody can promise a sighting, but your odds are better here than anywhere else in the Maldives in February.
Fuvahmulah is for experienced divers. The channels off this single-island atoll in the deep south are known for tiger sharks, thresher sharks and hammerheads. It's a different kind of trip from a resort holiday, so we plan it as a separate itinerary.
Visibility and night diving
Clear ocean water flows in from the northeast, so visibility often reaches 20 to 30 metres or more, especially on the eastern channels. That makes February good for drift dives and underwater photos.
Maaya Thila in North Ari Atoll is one of the best-known night dives in the country. After dark, white-tip reef sharks hunt around the pinnacle and moray eels come out of the reef.
Species | Best February area | Realistic odds |
Reef manta rays | Western side of atolls (e.g. South Ari west) | Good, small groups |
Whale sharks | South Ari Marine Protected Area | Fair to good |
White-tip reef sharks | Maaya Thila (night) and most thilas | Very good |
Tiger and thresher sharks | Fuvahmulah | Good for experienced divers |
Manta feeding frenzies | Hanifaru Bay, Baa | Not in February |
What February costs and when we book
This is where most DIY budgets go wrong. The rate on a booking site is rarely what you end up paying, so it's the first thing we go through with clients.
Resort rates and the tax stack

In February, five-star resorts usually cost $1,500 to $5,000+ per night (about ₹1,44,000 to ₹4,80,000+). Entry-level overwater villas at mid-range resorts start around $800 to $1,200 per night (about ₹77,000 to ₹1,15,000).
Here's how that plays out for a couple in a $1,000 per night villa:
Item | USD | INR (approx.) |
Room rate | $1,000 | ₹96,000 |
+ 10% service charge | $100 | ₹9,600 |
+ 17% T-GST on $1,100 | $187 | ₹17,950 |
+ Green Tax (2 × $12) | $24 | ₹2,300 |
Real cost per night | $1,311 | ₹1,25,850 |
That's 31% above the headline price. Over five nights, it adds $1,555 (about ₹1,49,300) that many first-timers don't plan for. The departure tax and airport development fee come to around $100 (about ₹9,600) per person in economy, and they're usually built into your flight ticket.
When we put together a Maldives tour package, we show you the full tax-inclusive figure up front, so checkout holds no surprises.
The Valentine's week surcharge
From roughly February 12 to 16, many resorts raise rates and add compulsory gala dinners or "romance packages" with champagne and set menus. Some also set minimum stays over these dates, so the same villa can cost noticeably more than it did a week earlier.
We usually suggest travelling February 1 to 11 or February 17 to 28 instead. The weather and water are the same, and you pay standard rates. If Valentine's Day matters to you, celebrate on the 10th or the 18th. We can still set up a private beach dinner.
When to book each part of the trip
What | When we recommend booking | Why |
Resorts and guesthouses | 4 to 6 months ahead (August or September) | Best villa categories sell out first |
Early-bird resort deals | 90+ days ahead | Many resorts offer 20% to 30% off |
Flights from India | 6 to 10 weeks ahead | Direct routes fill up fast in peak season |
Liveaboard dive boats | 6 to 12 months ahead | Limited cabins, high demand |
When a resort runs an early-bird offer, check whether it stacks with the free nights or other perks in a Maldives honeymoon package. Sometimes a "stay 5, pay 4" deal beats the percentage discount, and working that out is a big part of our job.
Private resort vs. local island

You don't need a private island to enjoy the Maldives. Local islands like Maafushi, Dhigurah and Thulusdhoo have guesthouses that cost a fraction of a resort.
Private resort | Local island guesthouse | Split stay | |
Typical cost | $800 to $1,200+ per night, overwater entry level (₹77,000 to ₹1,15,000+) | $70 to $110 per person per day (₹6,700 to ₹10,600) | Mix of both |
Green Tax | $12 (₹1,150) pp/night | $6 (₹580) pp/night at small guesthouses | Both |
Alcohol | Available | Not available | Only at resort |
Beach dress code | Anything goes | Bikini beach only | Varies |
Best for | Honeymoons, total privacy | Budget, divers, culture | Getting both experiences |
A split stay is one of our most booked February packages: 4 nights on Dhigurah for whale sharks and village life, then 3 nights at a resort to finish in comfort. You see more of the country and still get the overwater villa, without paying resort prices for the whole week.
Best atolls for a February trip
The atoll you choose shapes most of the things to do in the Maldives on your trip, whether that's whale shark snorkelling or a week of lying on a private beach. These are the places to visit in the Maldives we suggest most often for February.
North and South Malé Atolls:

If you'd rather skip the seaplane, start here. Speedboat transfers from the airport take 15 to 60 minutes and run day and night, so a late flight is fine. That helps a lot if you're on an evening flight out of India.
Dry-season diving is good here too. Banana Reef in North Malé and Kandooma Thila in South Malé are popular drift dives, and the area has some of the country's best surf breaks.
South Ari Atoll: whale sharks and village life

South Ari is the whale shark atoll. Dhigurah Island has a long sandbank and a quiet village, with guesthouses that run whale shark trips from the island itself. It's our first suggestion for mid-range budgets when marine life is the main reason for the trip.
Vaadhoo Island: the glowing beach
Vaadhoo, in Raa Atoll, is known for bioluminescent plankton that makes the waterline glow blue at night. A dark sky helps, so we try to time visits close to the new moon. We tell every client the same thing about this one: the glow depends on how much plankton is in the water that night, so it's never guaranteed.
Baa Atoll: quiet luxury
Baa is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with spread-out, high-end resorts and healthy house reefs. February means calm water, good snorkelling right off the villa, and none of the Hanifaru crowds that arrive in the wet season. Most Baa resorts need a seaplane, so we plan your flights around that.
Seaplane luggage and customs
Seaplanes usually allow 20kg checked plus 5kg hand luggage. Extra weight is charged per kilo, so pack light if your resort needs a seaplane.
Leave alcohol out of your bag. Bringing it into the Maldives is illegal, and customs will take it at the airport, duty-free bottles included.
Conclusion
If reliable sunshine and calm, clear water are what you want, February is about as good as the Maldives gets. Go in with a realistic budget: count the full tax stack, avoid Valentine's week if you can, and lock in your resort by early autumn.
Pick the atoll to suit the trip. The Malé atolls make transfers easy, South Ari is for whale sharks, Baa is for quiet luxury, and local islands let you spend on experiences instead of the villa. Save the big manta gatherings for a June to October trip and enjoy the smaller encounters February gives you.
Frequently asked questions
Is February worth the peak season price?
For most of our clients, yes. You're paying for the most dependable weather of the year, so fewer excursions get cancelled and you spend more time in the water. On a tighter budget, you can still get February weather for less by staying on a local island or travelling outside February 12 to 16.
How much does a Maldives trip in February cost from India?
On a local island, plan for about ₹6,700 to ₹10,600 ($70 to 110)perpersonperday,coveringtheguesthouse,mealsandsomeexcursions.Atamid-rangeresort,expect₹96,000to₹1,44,000+(1,000 to 1,500+)pernightfortwoaftertaxes,beforemealsandactivities.ReturnflightsfromIndiaareextra.Luxuryresortscangowellabove₹4,80,000(5,000) per night.
Is the Maldives safe for solo travellers in February?
Yes. Local islands like Maafushi, Dhigurah and Thulusdhoo are friendly and easy to get around alone, and guesthouses make it simple to join group snorkel and dive trips. Resorts work for solo trips too, though you'll pay the full villa rate. In villages, follow the local dress code.
